Hair Transplant and the Important Role of
Microscopes
The microscope plays a huge role in modern hair transplant. In a recent lecture on hair replacement Los Angeles, Dr. Sean Behnam explained the many advantages to using microscopes. Due to the ease of viewing the hairs better under the microscope compared to the naked eye, there is a conservation of donor hair. In fact, 10 to 30 percent more hairs are able to be harvested using microscopes than the naked eye alone. In addition to the increased magnification system that the microscope provides, the use of the light beam focused on the donor hair makes the donor tissue even more translucent under the microscope. The combination of the greater magnification and greater translucency enables for a finer dissection of the hair follicles. It further prevents the transection of adjacent hair shafts. Without the use of microscopes, the rate of transection and damage would be greater. The cases of great hair transplants would've been better if all hair transplant physicians would have used a combination of microscope and powerful illumination. Unfortunately, not a lot of physicians use stereomicroscopes because of the high cost, increased labor, and the need for an experienced staff. However, the overall benefits of better outcome, less damage to hair grafts and a more natural result outweighs these disadvantages.
At Dermatology and Hair Restoration Specialists, Dr. Sean Behnam exclusively uses high powered microscopes for dissection of hair follicles. Our experienced surgical staff is able to dissect even grey and white hair through the microscope without any difficulties. The microscope facilitates the cutting of precisely sized grafts and shapes that leave an optimal amount of tissues around them. These grafts are small enough to be inserted in a recipient site of even 0.75 millimeters and they're large enough to contain enough protective tissue around them. It is our experience that the use of microscopes results in better growth of hair grafts and more natural results.
